What Are Weldless Chains?
Weldless chains are chains with links that are secured together by machine twisting or bending rather than by welding. While they are somewhat less secure than welded chains, they still find employment in many load-bearing applications, such as animal, boat, and vehicle tethering, structure and equipment builds, and barrier construction.
Types of Weldless Chain
Weldless are available in a wide range of sizes and materials to suit different chain needs. They also vary in regard to design and performance characteristics depending on the requirements and restrictions of the load-bearing application. Some of the types available include:
Single Jack Weldless Chain
Single jack weldless chains are weldless chains with links twisted approximately 90 degrees to each other, forming a figure-eight pattern. They are often used for the suspension of light fixtures, such as fluorescent lighting elements or flowerpots.
Double Jack Weldless Chain
Double jack weldless chains are general utility chains that feature a similar design to that of single jack weldless chains. However, their lower loops consist of two strands of wire instead of one. They are commonly employed in applications where high load-bearing strength is not critical, such as for hanging lighting fixtures or constructing children’s toys.
Single Loop Weldless Chain
Single loop weldless chains are made in a single loop pattern with interlocking eyes. The link ends are locked down after forming the eye to make exceptionally flat weldless chains. They are suitable for use with operating valve wheels, overheard doors, sprocket wheels, and ventilators.
Double Loop Weldless Chain
Double loop weldless chains have both loops of the links identical in shape and size, wrapped in the middle with a center tie. They are the most commonly used type of weldless chain, due to their lighter material weight, flexibility, and strength. They are often used alongside recreational equipment, padlocks, boats, and gates.
Sash Weldless Chain
Sash weldless chains are made from flat wire and can be used alongside fixtures specially designed for sash weldless chains or S-hook rings and other attachments. They are commonly employed for suspension operations involving double-hung sashes and pulley assemblies.
Safety Weldless Chain
Safety weldless chains—also referred to as plumber’s weldless chains—are stamped from flat brass wire. They are generally utilized in applications that require lighter chains, such as in plumbing fixtures or as keeper chains.
Register Chain
Register chains are used in applications involving opening/closing mechanisms, such as for furnace dampers, doors, and ducts or skylights.
